A Few Words About Drawing Rocky for Wordless Wednesday

July 16, 2014

Just before my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer, her dog Rocky passed away in his sleep. My mom really loved Rocky and wanted to have him memorialized with art. And not just art from anyone. She wanted me to draw him. :)

Portrait of Rocky the Dog

It really helps me to draw a dog if I have a great photo, and my mom had the perfect one of Rocky.

Third Sketch of Rocky the Dog

It took a few sketches to get the proportions of Rocky right.

Drawing Rocky the Dog Step 1

I traced the sketch onto acid free pastel paper. As always, the first color I added was to the eyes and nose using pastel pencils.

Drawing Rocky the Dog Step 2

The next part was coloring Rocky’s open mouth. This was actually far more difficult that I first thought it would be.

I’m almost done!

The final touches were adding Rocky’s whiskers (which is something I almost always forget) and adding texture to his long neck fur. This photo is actually a little dark compared to the original. Imagine the fur as white as in the previous image.

I was lucky enough to be able to complete this drawing while my mom was visiting me (which was just before I moved to Iowa). She was able to watch me draw and got to see me finish it. And I am proud to say that she absolutely loved it!

Almost Wordless Wednesday – Four Letter F-Word

July 9, 2014

Okay, so it’s not quite wordless. Is it ever?

The four-letter f-word at our house has a whole different (and much better) meaning.

Cute Dog Pierson

“Did someone say FOOD?”

Maya Handmade Dog Collar

“I’m pretty sure you said you were going to give me food for posing in this new handmade dog collar from our friend Yinghua.”

(Admittedly, the photo of Pierson is from a while back when we still lived in Kansas. But it isn’t a photo I have posted before. Maya’s photo, however, is recent. Our friend, Yinghua, made this for Maya and sent it to us just after we moved to Iowa.)

I hope you enjoyed the Wordless Wednesday blog hop! Check out the link below to see more cute pet photos.

Nearly Wordless Wednesday – Our New House in Des Moines

July 2, 2014

We moved from Lawrence, Kansas to Des Moines, Iowa in mid May. Maya and Pierson settled into our new house very well:

Cute Maya Upside Down in Des Moines

Maya has a dog bed, but she’s made herself quite comfortable sleeping upside down on the hardwood floor in the living room.

Two Dogs Under My Desk

Somehow, Maya and Pierson both manage to find room under my desk when I work.

Dogs and New Dog Bowls

“Hey, our bowls are empty!” In celebration of our new home, I bought Maya and Pierson new colorful dog bowls and dog mats.

Pierson Looks Out the Back

There are a ton of squirrels and rabbits in our back yard so Pierson likes to sit here and watch.

Two Dogs on the Back Porch

We don’t have a fenced yard so in nicer weather we will hang out on the back porch, which is blocked off with a baby gate.

Dog Pierson Looks Sad

Pierson looks unhappy about his new home, but in reality he was pouting about having to hold still for the photo shoot.

Dogs on New Dog Bed Cover

Maya and Pierson got new bed covers for their dog bed. This dog bed is upstairs by the bedroom and their other dog bed is in the living room.

Not Quite Wordless Wednesday – My Mom and the Dogs

March 26, 2014

My mom is doing well so far with her recent diagnosis. She is tired often but is keeping a positive attitude and living life as best as possible. It’s amazing how happy she is staying despite the adversity. She has been staying with my husband and I for the past couple of days. Here is a photo of her with Maya and Pierson.

Also, while she is here I have been drawing her beloved dog Rocky who passed away in January. This is what I have done so far. I should be finished with it later today. And around 2pm today, I will be taking her to the airport. She is going to Oregon to be with my sisters and brother and her numerous friends.

Before moving to Missouri a few years ago, my mom lived most of her life in Oregon and is excited about going back. After my stepdad is finished taking care of selling their belongings and property in Missouri, him and I are going to drive to Oregon with their dog Solo. I will be in Oregon with my mom for a couple of weeks or so. Don’t worry, I will still be taking care of business for PetAutoSafety.com.

Rocky Small Drawing Almost Done

My mom’s beloved dog Rocky passed away in January. She wanted me to draw him for her so I have been working on this while she’s been visiting me.

Not Quite Wordless Wednesday – My Mom

March 5, 2014

I’ve told you in the past about my mom, about how I got my love for dogs from her and about how my mom was the dog rescue lady in our town. Recently, we’ve found out that she has brain cancer. So today I am going to share just a few words about this special woman. She’s not only made a difference in my life but also in the lives of others, including the lives of many dogs. Of the many lessons she taught me, the most enduring thing is that dogs are family too. I love you, Mom! ❤•.✿.•❤

Rocky Standing Over Mom

My mom recently lost her dog Rocky. This is him standing on the top of her chair. Rocky was a very lovable dog but he loved my mom more than anyone.

Solo the Border Collie Mix

My mom survived lung cancer a few years ago. This is her after recovery and with her dog Solo.

Mom and Goat Sandy

My mom loves all animals. This is Sandy, her goat… just one of the kids ;)

Wordless Wednesday – Toys All Over the House

February 19, 2014
Pierson Kibble Drop Dog Toy 1

One dog, three dog toys. Two dogs, thirty dog toys… maybe more.

No, I don’t have children. But one might think so with all these toys all over the place. It never fails that the moment I put them all away, Maya or Pierson suddenly want the dog toy on the bottom. Sillies. :D

Dog Toys All Over the Floor 001

De-stuffed bunny, piggy bottle buddy, two red owl blanket toys from Petco with the owl heads torn off, invincibles gecko, and a homemade dog toy made form a scarf and a tennis ball.

Dog Toys All Over the Floor 002

That green thing in the background is the toy box. There are lots of toys piled around it. On the dog bed is an antler horn and the orange invincibles gecko. That brown thing is the blanket. Pierson sometimes considers the blanket a toy.

Do your dogs leave their stuff all over your house?

February 12, 2014

Welcome to Wordless Wednesday! Here are a couple of photos of some great stuff Maya and Pierson received recently:

The “all the way” command is mastered when you use Jones Natural Chews as a reward.

Wordless Wednesday – More Snow Than We’ve Ever Experienced

February 5, 2014

Yesterday just snowed and snowed. It ended up being well over 12 inches.

Pierson in 1 inch of Snow

In the morning, Pierson checked out the newly fallen snow. This is about 1 inch.

Maya in 1 inch of Snow

Maya was a little bit interested in the snow yesterday morning, but 1 inch wasn’t enough for her to get excited about.

Pierson in 3+ Inches of Snow

This is early afternoon and Pierson is laying in about 3 inches of snow.

Maya in 3 Inches of Snow

Maya’s having some fun in the snow now. She’s looking for a snowball I threw.

Pierson in Snow Looking for Snowball

Pierson is looking for another snowball I threw.

Pierson Looking at All the Snow

Pierson doesn’t quite know what to do with himself and all this fluffy white snow.

Pierson in Snow over 12 inches 001

By 9:30 pm, we had over 12 inches of snow and are expecting another 1-2 inches. Pierson is loving it.

Maya in Snow over 12 inches 002

Maya was enjoying the snow until she realized she had to go poo. Where to go?

Me in Snow over 12 inches 003

Either I’m very short, or this snow is really deep. This is definitely over a foot of snow.

Me in Snow over 12 inches 005

Here I am at about 9:30pm standing in over a foot of snow. Too bad it is going to be really cold tomorrow. I could make a really cool fort with all this snow.
