Hello Again! So Much Has Changed…

February 20, 2019

Hey all! Long time no see. I just now realized how long it has been since I last posted. My life has changed so much changed this past couple of years. It has been quite a whirlwind. Some days I still feel like I haven’t been able to set my feet on solid ground.

Before I tell you all that’s happened, let me tell you what prompted me here. A blogger that I had once followed also had stopped blogging. But she made a recent post that was very sad. Hawkeye at http://browndogcbr.blogspot.com/ has passed on. Though I hadn’t been following any bloggers for a while, the news touched my heart. I miss all of you and your stories about your furry loved ones. Many of you, including Hawkeye, have provided me with fond memories and a connection with fellow dog lovers that is not always easy to find. You will be greatly missed, Hawkeye.

Before you get too worried about what has changed in my life, let me assure you that my life changes have been good changes and that Maya and Pierson are still doing well. Pierson is the same ornery booger that he’s always been. He still hates other dogs (except Maya). I’m still working on his leash reactive behaviors. He still barks at everything, eats poop, and still manages to mangle some poor wildlife animal that couldn’t escape our yard fast enough. But he’s still as cute as ever, albeit a little less actively cute because he’s getting older. He’s still good at giving me comfort when I get stressed. Maya is the same loveable Labrador, but she has gotten noticeably old. She sleeps a lot more and her playful moods happen less often. Her face is much whiter and she’s starting to get those old-lady-dog-warts. But she’s still very happy and healthy for her age.

Now to the changes that have taken place… After my husband and I moved back to Kansas from Iowa, we reopened the discussion about having children. Since I’m over 40 years old and since our earlier attempts at IUI, IVF, and other infertility treatments didn’t work, we decided on another route. Early in 2016, we began the process of becoming foster parents. We decided to take it slow by only fostering one child at a time and only on a respite-need basis, which means very short-term, such as a few days or even a few weeks.

A few of our foster children ended up staying with us longer. After taking in one girl for a week, we were asked a few months later if we’d take her again but this time for a few months. We gladly agreed. I can’t tell you her circumstances, but I can tell you she is back with her family and is doing very well. I will tell you more about our next long-term placement shortly.

While fostering children, we also looked into the possibility of adopting. We weren’t quite ready to adopt through the foster system because we weren’t sure we could handle the extra challenge of caring for children from hard places. Our hearts wanted to, but there’s a huge difference in wanting to and being able to. Because my husband is Chinese and because his parents still have old fashioned beliefs about continuing the family line, we decided to meet them halfway and adopt a child in need from China. In November of 2016, we contacted an organization called CCAI. In December of 2016, our home study was approved. And in January of 2017, we were matched with a two-year-old boy with spina bifida. The process for adopting him was only just beginning though. There was a lot of paperwork to complete and approvals needed from various organizations in both the U.S. and in China. So it wasn’t until December of 2017 that we were able to meet him and bring him home.

Before that, we were still fostering children. As I said, we were only fostering one child at a time. But in April of 2017 our caseworker begged us to take in two teenagers. It was only supposed to be for a month, but their placement with their relative kept falling through because the relative was having difficulty in meeting all the requirements. What was supposed to take a month turned into two, then four, then eight. Needless to say, we all became very attached. When it came time for us to go to China to get the boy we decided to name Edward, or Eddie for short, they were excited for us but there was also a bitter-sweetness to it. While we were in China, we were expecting that they’d be placed with their relative. So leaving for China meant saying goodbye to them.

But placement with the relative fell through again. We flew into the U.S. on December 23rd, but did not get Eddie home until Christmas Eve. And on Christmas Eve, our two foster children were returned to us. It was an amazing day. Eddie looked at my foster son and said ge ge, which means big brother in Chinese. Eddie still wasn’t quite sure what to think of me (he latched on to my husband right away), but he felt comfortable enough to want to sit in my daughter’s lap. He’d never seen dogs in real life before but was luckily more curious about Maya and Pierson than afraid.

This day was also very special because it was then that our foster kids decided they didn’t want to go live with their relative and they wanted to stay with us. I can’t even begin to tell you how much my heart swelled that day. The happiness of it still makes my eyes water. My foster son has since decided he doesn’t want to be adopted, but he does still want to live with us. We are still working on adopting our foster daughter. The process for adopting her wasn’t nearly as complicated for us as it was for adopting Eddie, but the bureaucratic slowness of our government system is ridiculous. We are hoping her adoption will happen within the next month or so.

I feel extremely blessed. But, as you might imagine, free-time is not something I have much of anymore. So it may be a while before I blog again. Thank you for stopping by!

Learning the Copy Me Command

February 23, 2016
Dog Pierson Sitting

“Okay, I’m game. But only if I get lots of cookies.”

I know I said I wasn’t going to do much blogging anymore, but I found another great article I wanted to share. Today as I was doing yoga, I recalled a video of a dog who was copying his person and I thought it would be so much fun if I could teach my dogs to copy me. Pierson is already a great candidate since he is intensely interested in me when I do yoga. But I had no idea how to teach him how to copy me, so I googled it. Here is the article I found – “Training ‘Do-As-I-Do’: Fun and Efficient“. The training tips seem simple enough. I’m pretty sure we can do this, so I’m going to give it a try and let you know how it goes.

8 Photos of Happiness

July 29, 2015

I’ve been selected by Flea with DogTreatWeb for Jones Natural Chews to join in this fun blog hop activity to share 8 photos of happiness.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve blogged here. Things have settled down since last year’s craziness, but I haven’t gotten back into the blogging spirit except through my writing blog. Consider this new post as an update that all is well… and we’ll be moving again! Yep. After a little over a year of living in Des Moines, we are moving back to Kansas. I love it here in Des Moines, but considering that I work from home, I go where my husband goes and his career is taking him back to his old job in Topeka. I’m both happy and sad about the move. I love it here in Des Moines, but it will be great to be around old friends again.

Anyway, back to the main point of this post – my 8 photos of happiness:

5 Year Anniversary Dawn Li Xi and Dogs

My husband makes me very happy. This is our 5 year anniversary photo taken earlier this year.

Labrador Maya Swimming at Gray's Lake

We’ve had some good times here in Des Moines. Maya and I would often go with our good friends and neighbors, Deb and Rodney, to Gray’s Lake. Maya really loves swimming and it is so fun watching her enjoy herself.

Mr. Fluffybutt 001

Rescuing Pierson was a very rewarding experience. My fluffy boy can be a pain when it comes to his barking habit and his dog aggression, but he is the cutest, sweetest, and funniest boy. Both he and Maya were a very good comfort when I cried about having to leave Des Moines.

Family Photo with Mom

My family makes me happy. This photo is only a small part of that family. This is my mom (a few months before she passed away from brain cancer) and me and my brothers and sisters on my mom’s side. I also have a niece and two nephews on this side. Then there is my brother and sister on my dad’s side and a niece and nephew there as well. I also have a great family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Chow Mix Sephi Artwork Drawn in Pastel

This photo combines two happy things. This dog is my beloved Sephi who passed away in 2011. Other dogs in past years have also brought happiness and include but aren’t limited to Cassie, Smokey, Huckleberry, and more. The other happy thing about this photo is that I drew this. Doing art makes me happy.

Our Family Sha Sha Jinbo Etc

All my friends make me happy. This photo is of us and our friends/housemates when we lived in Lawrence, Kansas. They have since moved back to China, but like all our good friends, we stay in touch.

Green and White Crocheted Baby Blanket

Doing crafts like crocheting, making jewelry, and other things makes me happy. This is a baby blanket I made for a friend’s baby.

Pink / Red Tulip Flowers

This tulip is from the front yard of my old house in Lawrence, Kansas. It does not represent a happiness of gardening. I hate gardening. This photo represents the happiness that nature brings me. I love nature.

There you have it. My 8 photos of happiness. Now to spread the happiness to a few bloggers. Although I haven’t been visiting many blogs lately, there are a few that I still like to visit.

Flea, of course, with Jones Natural Chews. She’s already done her 8 photos of happiness.
Lindsay with That Mutt.
Emma from MyGBGVlife, who has also already done her 8 photos of happiness.
And here’s one that I follow through my DawnRossAuthor blog – Whitney with Invisible Ink.
(BTW, writing also makes me happy.)

If you all choose to join, here are the rules:

1. Thank your nominator(s) and link to their blog(s).
2. Link to the creator of the event.
3. Post your eight photos of happiness.
4. Pop in a brief description of each photo, why you chose it or let the photos do the talking.
5. Spread the happiness and tag up to ten other bloggers!

Wordy Wednesday – Who Wants Breakfast? Maya Does!

March 25, 2015

It doesn’t matter how sound asleep my Labrador Maya is. If I say the word breakfast, food, cookie, or oops (to mean I dropped something on accident), she is suddenly alert and comes running!

Managing Undesirable Dog Behaviors

March 6, 2015
Bad Poetry Day - Roses Aren't Edible

Pierson likes poop so I need to manage his behavior.

Dogs will be dogs, but some of the things they want to do are annoying, unpleasant, or possibly not safe. If someone is not familiar with dog training, their first instinct might be to try to correct the issue with punishment. Those who are familiar with better ways to stop an undesirable behavior will try behavioral modification techniques such as redirection and positive reinforcement. But sometimes, we don’t have to go through all this work. Sometimes we can eliminate an undesirable behavior by managing it.

Let me give you an example. My dog Pierson loves to eat my other dog Maya’s poop. I’ve considered training him not to eat it. But let’s be honest, even if I did teach him not to eat it, he will probably still try whenever I’m not looking. I’ve also considered giving Maya something like NaturVet Coprophagia Stool Eating Deterrent to make her poop taste bad. But I’d have to buy this stuff all the time or risk Pierson realizing the poop wasn’t tainted and eating it. So what did I do instead? I simply decided to always pick up Maya’s poop right after she poops. Yes, it is a bit inconvenient, especially in colder weather. But it’s more sanitary and it has completely stopped Pierson from eating her poop. No training, no expensive supplements.

Another example is with Pierson’s barking. As you may know from previous posts, I gave in and got him a no bark collar. It worked well much of the time. But sometimes he really couldn’t help himself from barking and I felt terrible about the collar shocking him. It finally occurred to me that I should try managing his barking instead. This is what I did:

Determine the Cause of the Behavior

Pierson barks at surprising noises and he barks at squirrels, rabbits, and birds. I decided that barking at noises isn’t such a bad thing. I want to know if someone is creeping around my house. Even though most of the noises Pierson barks at are nothing to be concerned about, I can live with that. But the barking at squirrels, rabbits, and birds when he can see them out the back door window was too much.

Eliminate the Cause of the Behavior

Like how I eliminated Pierson’s desire for eating Maya’s poop by picking up her poop, I managed Pierson’s barking at animals he sees through the window by blocking the view from the window. It worked like magic! By simply putting a large piece of paper over the bottom half of the door window, I eliminated Pierson’s barking by at least 70%.

See how I blocked the door window so that Pierson can’t bark at squirrels?

“How am I going to talk to the squirrels now?”

Other Ways to Eliminate Undesirable Behaviors

If your dog tends to get in the trash, eliminate the behavior by getting a trash can with a secure lid or by putting the trash can in the pantry. If you don’t have a pantry, use a smaller trash can and put it under the kitchen sink. You may have to throw out trash more often, but isn’t that better than picking up trash from the floor and worrying about whether your dog ate something harmful?

Eliminate digging behaviors by filling his favorite digging spots with rocks or even his own poop. Keep your dog out of your garden by putting decorative fencing around your garden. Keep your dog from trying to bolt out the door by putting his leash on him before you open the door. Stop counter surfing by making sure food is always put away and/or out of reach. Keep your dog off the furniture by laying a sheet of foil over it when you’re not around.

Managing your dog’s undesirable behaviors isn’t always feasible and doesn’t always work. But if you think outside the box, you might just come up with a simpler way to stop your dog from doing things you don’t like. You can save time and even money by not having to hire a dog trainer.

Does your dog have an annoying behavior that you’d like to stop? Comment below and let’s see if we can come up with some creative ways to manage your dog’s behavior.

Wordless Wednesday – Slo-Bowl for Piggy Dogs

January 14, 2015

Maya and Pierson are piggy dogs. Eating from a normal bowl takes them less than a minute. The Kyjen Slo-bowl dog bowl makes them take at least five or more minutes.

Happy 3rd Gotcha Day Pierson

January 10, 2015

I can’t believe it has only been three years since I got my dog Pierson. It seems like he’s always been a member of the family.

Holiday Goodies for My Doggies

January 1, 2015

My dogs Maya and Pierson have received a lot of gifts this season. Our thank you is a little late, but your gifts did not go unnoticed.

Maya with light-up stick dog toy

Maya really likes the light-up stick. Pierson only wants it when Maya has it.

We won this great gift from Petco through AllThingsDogBlog. It’s a lightup stick dog toy and Maya absolutely loves it. It lights up and squeaks, although Maya broke the squeaker right away. It’s a soft but hard rubber that Maya can chew on safely without breaking off any pieces.

Boo Bucket from Jones Natural Chews

I forgot to take a photo of the Boo Bucket that Flea gave us from Jones Natural Chews so I borrowed this photo from Flea’s Dog Treat Web site.

We received the Halloween Boo Bucket from Flea when she came to visit in September. Then later, we won a bag of Jones Natural Chews dog treats through Flea’s Dog Treat Web. We won it for this video we did:

Spring Naturals Dog Treats

This is the company’s photo. I forgot to take a photo of the Spring Natural dog treats that we won.

We also won some dog treats from Spring Naturals through Rumpy Dog’s Blog. Those went fast too.

Labrador Retriever Ornament from ForLoveofaDog.com

I was too lazy to take my own photo so I borrowed this photo of my Labrador Retriever ornament from the place I bought it, ForLoveofaDog.com.

I didn’t win this ornament, but it was a gift to myself so I’m counting it. It is a wonderful ornament made by Sue with Talking Dogs blog and the For Love of a Dog jewelry retail site. I would buy her beautiful dog-themed jewelry too, but I don’t wear jewelry very often.

Maya with Kong Stick Dog Toy

Maya is pooped after playing with her Kong stick dog toy.

This gift is from me to Maya. It is a Kong stick and Maya loves sticks. I saw it reviewed on one of the blogs I follow, but sorry, I don’t remember who that was!

Dog Chews Olaf Snowman Dog Toy

Despite not having any stuffing, Olaf still lives!

This is a gift from me to Pierson. Pierson does not chew his toys like Maya does, so this stuffed squeaky has lasted a while. What do you think of the caption? 😀

Maya with Hide-a-Squirrel Dog Toy

There are six of these little squirrel dog toys in the Hide-a-Squirrel, and Maya loves every one of them.

This squirrel toy is part of a larger gift given last year by my friend Joanne with FleeceDogHarnesses. The Hide-a-Squirrel has stayed in good shape all year because I only allow Maya and Pierson to play with it when I supervise them. Otherwise, I’d have six destuffed squirrels all over my house! Joanne gave Maya and Pierson a Tail Teaser dog toy from Kyjen this year. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good picture because my camera doesn’t do action shots very well, and Maya was bouncing all over the place for this toy.

Thank you, Carrie, Flea, Jen, Sue, and Joanne! And Happy New Year to everyone. 🙂

Come on, let’s go and play!

This snowman dog toy was a gift. Find out what other gifts Maya and Pierson have received this year in tomorrow’s blog post.
