Update on the Move and My Mom

May 15, 2014

Hi everyone! Did you miss us? We sure missed all of you. It has been a very long but very busy month for me and a confusing one for Maya and Pierson. First off, Maya and Pierson had to be without me for a week while I went to visit my mom in Oregon. Then when I got back, my husband was gone, already starting his new job in Iowa.

I stayed at our house in Kansas as it was being fixed up for resale. Maya, Pierson, and I moved from sleeping in the bedroom, to the spare bedroom, then eventually to the basement while work was being done. They were, at one time, allowed in the kitchen, then denied; not allowed in the basement, then restricted to the basement; allowed free run of the back yard and porch, to only being allowed outside on a leash.

When we finally left our Kansas house on May 9th, we drove to Johnston, Iowa to stay with my husband in the temporary apartment he was staying in. We were supposed to move into our new home in Des Moines the following day. But that fell through and we stayed at the apartment through the weekend.

Then finally on Monday afternoon, we got to move into our new place!

Our New Place in Des Moines

We’re all moved into our new place in Des Moines!

Maya and Pierson have been exploring all over. It has been fun for Maya, but a little intimidating for Pierson. There are new noises for him to get used to (this is tough for a dog that barks in alarm at everything). There are a ton of big boxes all over the house that he’s not sure about. And it is a bit of an adjustment in the backyard because we no longer have a fenced yard. Yes, I chain them up, but only for less than 5 minutes at a time unless they really seem like they want to hang out back there instead of inside where I am rushing around from room to room trying to get things unpacked and organized.

I am still unpacking and organizing, so I’m not ready to get back into the blogosphere just yet. But soon, very very soon.

By the way, my mom is still doing okay. She is sleeping about 20 hours a day now, which is not a good sign. But when she is awake, she is still in good spirits. She is not in any pain. She is losing some of her mobility, but it is not so bad yet. She still gets to be at home with her husband (my stepdad) and her dog Solo. She had a very good day on Mother’s Day. Although I wasn’t there, my stepdad said that Sunday was one of her better days.

Here is a photo we took with our mom while I was visiting her in Oregon:

Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

My Mom and Her Dog Solo

April 10, 2014

I’m here in Oregon with my mom. She is still doing well, but she says her muscles are getting weaker and her eyesight worse. Despite this, her spirits are still up. Something happened regarding her dog Solo, though, that has got her down and I don’t know what to do.

My mom spent most of her life in Oregon before moving to Missouri a few years ago. Now with this diagnosis, she wanted to go back home to Oregon. So we got her a plane ticket and she flew ahead and is staying with a dear friend while also getting to see my sisters and brother and her niece and nephews. My stepdad stayed behind in Missouri to wrap up things at their property.

The plan for my stepdad and their dog Solo was that after my stepdad received their social security check, which was supposed to include a year’s worth of back pay, he was going to buy a vehicle, rent a trailer, pack up all his and my mom’s stuff, and drive with their dog Solo to Oregon. I was going to go along to help with the long drive.

The check never came, so my stepdad and I bought plane tickets to Oregon instead. I arrived Tuesday. He was supposed to arrive yesterday with Solo. He did arrive, but unfortunately the airline wouldn’t take Solo. They said her travel crate wasn’t airline approved. Luckily, the friend that had brought my stepdad to the airport was able to take Solo back home.

At this very moment, Solo is still in Missouri staying all by herself at my mom and stepdad’s old place. Their friend lives very nearby and is coming by a few times a day to feed and care for her. But otherwise, Solo is all alone.

My mom and stepdad are currently trying to figure out what to do. The coordination of all this is tricky at such a long distance. Can they count on this friend to do the legwork on finding the right crate and on making another four hour round trip to the airport to drop Solo off? I hope so. Not only that, this friend has to make sure he doesn’t forget Solo’s traveling paperwork and that this trip happens within a specified period before the paperwork expires. Otherwise, he will also have to take Solo to the vet again to get re-certified. And my mom and stepdad have to find a way to send this friend enough money to cover the crate, gas expense, and plane ticket expense.

I honestly can’t see this friend doing all this. I may be wrong, but I am still worried. I can only imagine how worried my mom and stepdad are too. This is what I am thinking of doing. After I get back home to Kansas on Sunday evening, I can work on getting an airline approved crate. I can also try to find the time to make the five hour trip to my mom’s old place in Missouri. I’d have to stay overnight, then make the two hour drive to the airport with Solo myself. From there, it is another three hour drive back to Kansas.

Finding the time to do this is tricky. I’m still packing our things for our move to Iowa. And I also have to coordinate painters, flooring people, landscapers, etc. in order to fix up our house so it can be put on the market. I WILL do whatever I need to get Solo reunited with my mom and stepdad. But if anyone has any better ideas, I’d love to hear them.

I think I’ve told you that Solo is a special needs dog and that she came from a terrible dog hoarding situation. As a result of her rescue by my mom and stepdad, Solo is highly protective of them and very close to them. She needs them as much as they need her. My mom especially needs her.

Update on Solo
My mom and stepdad found two friends in Missouri who can help out. One friend is going to find an airline approved crate. And the other friend will take Solo to the airport. Yay! 🙂

Oklahoma!

December 30, 2013

We had quite an eventful road trip to and from Texas and Kansas this holiday. Most of the adventures happened while we were traveling through Oklahoma. While it has been some time since I’ve seen the musical Oklahoma! my adventure could easily be accompanied by music.

Let’s begin with some dramatic music, something like the Jaws theme as we were approached by danger. Or perhaps some scary music from horror movies when some dummy ventures off from the group even though there is a mass murderer about.

Okay, our trip wasn’t that frightening. But it was pretty intense. On the way from Kansas to Texas we ran into the ice storm that ravaged through Oklahoma. It was about 9:00 at night or so and we were just entering into Oklahoma City. We planned on stopping in Oklahoma City for the night anyway, but we were hoping to make it to the south side of town rather than the north. The ice storm forced us to stop early.

Oklahoma Ice Coating a Car

This isn’t our car, but the ice on ours was just as bad. I couldn’t get a good photo of our car because it is such a light color.

Oklahoma Ice Storm 001

Ice coating the grass after the Oklahoma ice storm looks very interesting. Maya and Pierson could not walk on it.

Oklahoma Ice Storm 002

The ice was just over a quarter inch thick in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Ice Storm 003

This brown shrubby grass clump looks like coral under the ocean.

The worst part of this adventure was that we couldn’t reach the pet friendly hotel we planned on staying at. So I had a heck of a time finding a place. It was absolutely awful! The Holiday Inn I called said they had no pet friendly rooms left. Other hotels I called either did not allow pets, charged crazy fees for pets, or did not allow large pets. My savior was Motel 6 and I will tell you more about that on my Pet Auto Safety blog post – Saved by Pet Friendly Motel 6.

Our trip back to Kansas from Texas was much better. Imagine some happy music from Mary Poppins or holiday music, Wizards in Winter from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. On the way back from Texas, we went through Tulsa, Oklahoma to meet Flea from Dog Treat Web with Jones Natural Chews. And we had the BEST TIME EVER!

First off, my husband and I were greeted with open arms by the entire family. We met Flea, her husband Chris, and her three wonderful kids, Mae, Oliver, and Squatch (his nickname).

Next, we were welcomed with a wonderful Polish dinner. I love food and have never had the opportunity to eat Polish food before, so this was a fantastic treat. The first dish was sauerkraut soup and it was absolutely delicious!!! Next up was kielbasa with a horseradish sauce and pierogi with a sour cream sauce. Both were very very good, but the sauerkraut soup was the best. The recipe belongs to Chris’s mother and Flea has been gracious enough to share the sauerkraut soup recipe on one of her old blogs.

After dinner, I got to meet Flash, Patches, Bosco, and Jimmy! Flash and Patches are so much more animated in person. And they are super cute. Both were very friendly too. Bosco was a sweetie pie as well. Jimmy didn’t like me, though. Perhaps if I had made my visit in the day time, he would have been less intimidated by me.

Oklahoma with Flea and Bosco the Cat

Bosco is such a handsome kitty. Despite the fact that Pierson kept eyeing him, Bosco could care less.

Oklahoma with Mae

Mae, Flea’s daughter, is so funny and sweet.

Patches in Oklahoma

This is Patches. Isn’t she adorable?

Flash and Patches Oklahoma 001

Flash and Patches pose for the camera. Flash sticks out his tongue. I don’t think he liked the idea of having to sit still for a photo.

Flash and Patches Oklahoma 2

This is a sweet photo of Flash and Patches. Patches is the girl with the white face and freckled legs and Flash is the nearly all black one.

Jimmy the Duck Oklahoma

It was dark outside and Jimmy the duck kept running away from me as I tried to flash a photo.

Me and The Good Flea Oklahoma

Flea and I get a photo together. I just love her hair and her friendly smile. 🙂

Dog Flash Oklahoma

Flash is so cute and spunky for an older guy.

After this were the gifts. Oh my goodness, the gifts! Maya and Pierson got some wonderful Jones Natural Chews treats as well as a humongous bone. Thank you, thank you, thank you Flea! As if Maya and Pierson were not already spoiled enough. 😉

Big Bone Jones Natural Chews 003

This big bone from Jones Natural Chews was almost too big for Maya to pick up.

Big Bone Jones Natural Chews 004

Pierson couldn’t pick up the Jones Natural Chews bone because it was too big!

There you have it, a new version of the Oklahoma! musical. It was a scary beginning with a very happy ending. A little adventure to spice up an otherwise long long long boring road trip. Did you have any adventures this holiday?

Wordless Wednesday – Dog Swimming at Public Pools

August 21, 2013

Every year in the Kansas City metro area several public pools open up to the dogs. They do it at the end of the season just before they drain them. Here is Maya having a good time at Young’s Pool in Overland Park, Kansas for the annual Pooch Plunge.

Maya Swimming at Public Pool

So many yellow Labs swimming at the public pool that I can barely tell which one is Maya.

I have to admit that these are last year’s photos. I really wanted to take Maya to this event on the 17th, but my car was in the shop… and the husband wouldn’t let me take Maya in his car. 😦

Maya at Young's Public Swimming Pool

Which one is Maya?

No worries, though. Maya didn’t completely miss out. There is another Pooch Plunge event here in Lawrence at the beginning of September. We’re going, even if we have to walk there!

Maya Swimming with Tennis Ball

Lots of tennis balls were provided for the pups at the pool to fetch. Here comes Maya with one!

Even though the above photos aren’t current, I’m showing them to you now so perhaps you can check your area to see if any of your public pools open up for the dogs. Now’s the time! And if you don’t have any, maybe you can inspire your local parks and rec to do it next year.

Maya and Another Dog Swimming in Public Pool

Good girl, Maya!

On another happy note, Pierson’s roses and poo poem won the Bad Poetry Day Contest held by Ku at HaikuByKu.com and Oz at OzTheTerrier.com! Here is his poem again:

Wordless Wednesday – More Signs of Spring

April 10, 2013

Although today is supposed to get cooler again, at least it’s not going to be in the 30s. I really love spring in Kansas. When all the trees blossom it is a gorgeous array of color. Not all the trees have blossomed yet. Only one of our trees has so far. But I imagine in the next week or so, I will be able to look down my street and see a line of whites, creams, pinks, reds, and purples.

Here are more Wordless Wednesday spring photos of Maya & Pierson enjoying more outdoor time:

Pierson Playing with Blanket

Pierson was getting stir crazy in winter. He wrapped this blanket around his head by himself while playing.

Maya and I on Porch Swing

Maya and I enjoy cuddle time on the porch swing.

Budding Tulips 2

The Tulips are starting to bud. Soon we will have flowers!

Blossoming Trees 4

I love how the trees in Kansas blossom.

Wordless Wednesday – Trip to Texas for Thanksgiving Part II

November 28, 2012

Before you look at these pictures, go visit our Pet Auto Safety Blog for the first nine Wordless Wednesday photos from our trip to Texas. The first nine photos consist of the trip itself and are not to be missed! Now check out the other eight photos below:

Pierson was obsessed with Odie, my parent’s bird. Maya had no interest in the bird what-so-ever. There was one instance where Pierson went after the bird in the cage, but no one was hurt.

Maya hopes for a piece of Thanksgiving Turkey to fall while everyone prepares their plate for the Thanksgiving feast.

Everyone passed out after dinner. Here is Maya resting with my brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law.

The day after thanksgiving, my husband and our friends Sha Sha and Jinbo decided to make a Chinese dinner feast for my family. Left to right, my dad, me, my husband, Jinbo, and Sha Sha. My step-mom is taking the photo.

After dinner, we play Apples to Apples.

Over the weekend, we went to downtown Austin. This is the capitol building.

Another photo taken in downtown Austin.

On the way home to Kansas. Jinbo and Sha Sha fall asleep while Maya looks on longingly from the back. We all enjoyed the trip but can’t wait to get back home.

Pet Vacation Photo Contest – Win a $25 Gift Card

Have you gone somewhere fun with your dog? My dog Smokey and I went on a lot of vacations with me. I was really into hiking back then (about 15-20 years ago) and so was Smokey. He had his own back pack and everything. Our two best trips were our 3-day hike around Georgetown Lake in Texas and our week-long trip to Arizona. If you’ve had a fun vacation with your dog go visit our other blog, Pet Auto Safety Blog, for more details on how you can win a $25 gift card.

Dogtoberfest – Lawrence, KS

Pet Auto Safety will be at the Dogtoberfest here in Lawrence, Kansas tomorrow (October 7th). If you are in the Kansas City area, consider coming to Southpark, located on Massachusetts street in downtown Lawrence. The event is from 10am to 3pm. There will not only be vendors like myself, there will also be a lot of activities. Check out the disc dogs in action, have your dog try out an agility course, kids make crafts, adults answer dog trivia questions, everyone can win prizes.

My Labrador Maya had a blast at Dogtoberfest last year. Here are some photos:

(Nearly) Wordless Wednesday – R-Bar & Patio

August 22, 2012

Last Wednesday, I took my dog Maya to the R-Bar & Patio for “Canines & Cocktails”. No, Maya did not get a cocktail, but she got to enjoy playing with other dogs while mom enjoyed a cocktail (or two) and the company of other dog lovers. Every Wednesday, the R-Bar & Patio welcomes people and their pets and donates a portion of the proceeds to the Lawrence Humane Society. If you live in the Lawrence, Kansas area, stop by tonight or next Wednesday night. If you are not in the Lawrence, Kansas area, check for other bars or restaurants with an outdoor patio in your area. More and more places are becoming pet-friendly.
